If you’re looking for the perfect nose ring, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you want a delicate gold hoop, a dainty stud, or you’re trying to figure out what gauge and size to get — this guide covers everything.
At Ellie J Maui, Tracy has been handcrafting nose rings in Maui for over 40 years. In this guide, she shares everything she knows about nose rings from the different styles to the best materials for sensitive skin.
Types of Nose Rings
1. Nose Ring Hoops
Nose ring hoops are the most popular style and for good reason. A simple hoop through your nostril looks elegant, minimal, and works with every outfit. Hoop nose rings come in different diameters (measured in millimeters) and different gauges (the thickness of the wire).
The most common hoop styles are:
• Seamless hoops — a continuous ring that opens and closes by gently pulling the ends apart
• Captive bead rings (CBR) — a hoop held closed by a small bead in the gap
• Hinged hoops — easy to open and close with a small hinge mechanism
• C-shape nose rings — a hook-style ring that slides into the piercing without fully closing
At Ellie J Maui, our most popular nose ring hoop is the 14k Gold Nose Ring Hoop — handmade in yellow, rose, and white gold.
2. Nose Studs
Nose studs sit flush against the nostril, giving a more subtle look than a hoop. They come in several post styles:
• L-shaped posts — the most common; the L shape holds the stud in place
• Straight posts — go straight through the piercing; need a backing
• Bone/ball posts — a small ball or end piece keeps them in the piercing
• Screw posts — twist into the piercing for a secure hold
3. Seamless & C-Shape Nose Rings
Our C-Shape Nose Ring is one of our bestsellers. It slides in from the side, adjusts to fit your nostril, and the flat stopper piece keeps it secure. Available in 14k gold-filled, rose gold-filled, and sterling silver.
What Size Nose Ring Do I Need?
Nose ring sizing has two measurements: gauge (thickness of the wire) and diameter (size of the hoop).
Gauge
Gauge tells you how thick the jewelry wire is. The smaller the gauge number, the thicker the wire:
| Gauge | Thickness | Best For |
| 22 | 0.6mm | Very thin, fresh piercings |
| 20 | 0.8mm | Most common nose piercing size |
| 18 | 1.0mm | Slightly thicker; stretched piercings |
| 16 | 1.2mm | Bold look; some septum piercings |
Most standard nose piercings are done at 20 gauge. If you’re not sure, start with 20g.
Diameter (Hoop Size)
Hoop diameter is measured across the inside of the ring:
| Diameter | Fit |
| 5-6mm | Very snug; sits close to the nostril |
| 7-8mm | Standard fit — most people |
| 9-10mm | Looser fit; hangs slightly lower |
Not sure? Our Nose Ring Gauge Size Guide has a full chart to help you measure at home.
Best Materials for Nose Rings
The material of your nose ring matters — especially if you have sensitive skin. Here’s what you need to know:
14k Solid Gold
The gold standard (literally). Solid 14k gold is hypoallergenic, tarnish-free, and safe for all skin types. It’s the most durable option and will last a lifetime. Our [14k Gold Nose Ring Hoop](https://elliejmaui.com/product/14k-gold-nose-ring-in-yellow-rose-and-white-gold-20g-septum-hoop/) is handmade from solid 14k gold in Maui.
14k Gold-Filled
Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of 14k gold bonded to a base metal core — it contains 100x more gold than gold-plated. It looks exactly like solid gold, won’t peel or flake, and is hypoallergenic. At a fraction of solid gold’s price, it’s our most popular choice at Ellie J Maui.
Sterling Silver
.925 sterling silver is a safe, hypoallergenic option at a lower price point. It can tarnish over time but is easy to clean. Great for people who want the look of silver.
What to Avoid
Avoid nickel, brass, and low-quality “surgical steel” if you have sensitive skin. These materials often cause reactions — redness, itching, or infections. Stick to solid gold, gold-filled, or implant-grade materials.
Nose Ring Styles — Which One Is Right for You?
Gold Nose Rings
Yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold all look stunning in a nose piercing. Yellow gold is the classic. Rose gold gives a warmer, more romantic look. White gold is sleek and modern.
All of our gold nose rings at Ellie J Maui are available in all three gold tones — handmade by Tracy in Maui.
Hypoallergenic Nose Rings
If you have sensitive skin or a nickel allergy, look for:
• 14k solid gold (yellow, rose, or white)
• 14k gold-filled
• Implant-grade titanium
• Sterling silver (.925)
Our entire gold and gold-filled collection is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin.
Heart Nose Rings
Heart-shaped nose rings are one of our most searched styles. Our Diamond Heart Nose Hoop features a delicate heart with a CZ stone — handmade in 14k gold, 8mm, 20 gauge.
How to Choose the Right Nose Ring
Here’s a simple way to decide:
1. First piercing? Start with a 20 gauge, 7–8mm hoop in gold-filled or solid gold. Easy to insert, safe for healing.
2. Want minimal? Choose a small seamless hoop (6mm) or a dainty stud.
3. Want a statement? Go for a larger hoop (9–10mm) or a decorative stud with a CZ or heart design.
4. Sensitive skin? Only 14k solid gold, gold-filled, or titanium. Nothing else.
